Mahogany Norfolk Wall Clock by Henry Young, Swaffham

The county of Norfolk, England, produced more of these large, weight-driven wall clocks than any other area. They were often used in offices and public places.

Case: Fine figured mahogany veneer decorates the front of the case, which is of mostly solid mahogany with an oak backboard. The very attractive mahogany dial surround carries the brass bezel and domed glass over the dial.

Dial: The 16-inch diameter silvered brass dial is engraved in the style used from about 1770 to 1810, with minutes numbered every interval of five. Silvered brass dials gave way to cheaper painted dials by about 1800-1810. Hands are original, blued steel.

Movement: The nicely made five pillar movement uses rack striking to sound the hours on a single bell, and is of two week duration. Escapement is anchor recoil. Weights are brass-cased lead, restored.

Maker: Henry Young is listed in Norfolk & Norwich Clocks & Clockmakers, by C. & Y. Bird, as working in the village of Swaffham from 1791 to as late as 1837.
