Barometer Restoration

A properly and sympathetically restored antique barometer is a pleasure to see and own, and is worth more in every sense than one that is decrepit and unsightly. If you own an antique barometer that is in need of restoration, we may be able to help.

Please note the following before calling or emailing:

Restoration is offered for mercury barometers only, not aneroid (mechanical) barometers.

Mercury barometers can not be shipped by UPS, Federal Express, the Post Office, or similar package delivery services. Barometers needing work will have to be delivered to us in central Virginia, and returned by the same method. In some limited circumstances we may be able to collect or deliver your barometer, but for the most part it will have to be brought to us. This is because of the restrictions that shippers have on handling any object containing mercury.

We will give a written estimate for all the work that you agree to have done, and stick to that estimate. Your maximum charges will be agreed before we start any work.

We offer:

  • Restoration of all components of the mercury system, including making an appropriate new glass tube if needed, making or repairing wood cisterns, etc.

  • Resilvering of register plates, dials, thermometer plates, etc. by traditional methods

  • Refurbishing or replacement of damaged or corroded brass components and mechanisms

  • Proper replacement of missing or mismatched thermometers

  • Making and fitting of proper hands where needed

  • Replacement or repair of all wood components of the case, including veneer work, decorative stringing of all types, replacing missing mouldings, turning replacement cistern covers, etc.

  • Traditional French polishing, and wax finishes

  • Replacement of all types of damaged glass

  • And just about any other work you can think of.

Please note: we do not sell individual replacement parts of any kind.
